Special EventsIn addition to our weekly Sunday assembly and our semimonthly discussion groups, there are a number of special events that bring us together for worship, celebration, and companionship. To see dates for upcoming events, please visit our calendar page. Picnics: In the spring, summer, and fall, on the day before each quarterly business meeting, we gather at the parsonage for a picnic.
Riverside Sunday: On one Sunday in July every year, we hold our regularly scheduled services and fellowship meal at Memorial Park, in a large pavilion on the bank of the Minnesota River. Passion Week: On the evening of Good Friday, we remember the passion of Christ with a Tenebrae Service. “Tenebrae” is Latin for “shadows” or “darkness.” It is also the name of a traditional worship service performed in the last three days leading up to Easter Sunday. In the Service of Tenebrae we gradually extinguish our lighting throughout a series of Bible readings about Christ’s passion, accompanied by reverent congregational and choral singing. The increasing darkness instructs our meditation upon the increasing anguish of our Lord, and corresponds with the actual midday darkening of the land during the crucifixion. At the conclusion of this service, we depart in silence, something we do at no other time of the year. (To see a program from the 2012 Service of Tenebrae, click here.) This focused meditation upon the cross of Christ is as moving as the celebration is joyful that follows on Easter morning. On Easter morning, we joyfully gather together for a breakfast feast before our morning worship service.
Christmastime: In the days leading up to Christmas, some of us spend time practicing Christmas carols together, then spend one evening singing them at various places in the city of Granite Falls. Afterward, we repair to the parsonage for refreshments and good conversation. Then, on Christmas Eve, the congregation joins together for a “Candlelight Service” to read the account of Christ’s incarnation and birth, singing Christmas carols at several points in the reading. Conferences: In the spring, we hold a conference in which we invite fellow Christians to gather with us for an extended time of teaching. For example, in 2009 we held a Conference on Music and Worship, in 2010 (in cooperation with First Baptist Church of Marshall, MN), a Conference on the Passion of Christ, and in 2011, a Conference on Suffering. |
